In 1996, the Nepal civil war broke out as the communist party attempted to overthrow the existing government. The Royal Nepal Army was brought in to use police force to stop this uprising and two years later the amount of force was increased to try to stop the ongoing war.

The Prince Dipendra killed his father and mother, King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya, in 2001, causing the kingship to fall to his uncle Gyanendra. Supplies and monetary aid was sent by the United States, Europe and India to the Nepalese government through the War on Terror in 2002.
By the end of the war in 2006, there had been a close to 13,000 causalities.
