The Thais moved from their ancestral home in southern China into mainland southeast Asia around the 10th century AD. Prior to this, Indianized kingdoms such as the Mon, Khmer and Malay kingdoms ruled the region. The Thais established their own states starting with Sukhothai, Chiang Saen and Chiang Mai and Lanna Kingdom and then Ayutthaya kingdom. These states fought each other and were under constant threat from the Khmers, Burma and Vietnam. Much later, the European colonial powers threatened in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

    A Look at Nepal Today

Nepal to this day is one of the most underdeveloped and poorest countries in the world. Most of the income for this nation comes from its agricultural communities. There is great potential for the use of hydropower in this area but due to the government instability and the risk of natural disasters in the area, little has been done on this front.
In 1996 there was a civil war that broke out in Nepal that lasted for the next 10 years. Upon the end of the war in 2006, the government has shifted political parties several times as it has attempted to draft a constitution, which is due in May of this year.

    Nepal: History and Facts

Located in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal was the birthplace of Buddhism.  Around 563 B.C., Prince Siddhartha Gautama was born and later gave up his wealth and status in search of enlightenment.
It is unknown the exact origin of the name of Nepal; it could have originated from the name of a tribe in the area, or it might have come from the root “Ne”, which could have come from the name of an advisor to one of the kings, or could have come from the local language where its meanings range from “center” to “holy”.
