In the 60s, hippies heard tales of marijuana and hashish growing everywhere in Nepal and flocked to find it. When the Nepalese government found out that these foreigners were actually causing trouble and were not bringing in the much longed for foreign currency, they announced that they would no longer be allowing visas to be given out. Upon this announcement, the influx of foreigners quickly subsided, leaving behind a substantial heroin problem.

Fuel Crisis in Nepal

Due to the conflict in Libya, the demand for fuel has increased. This fuel is not only used for vehicles, due to their daily extended power outages.

            The Nepal Oil Corporation is also having trouble meeting the demand due to the fact that it owes over $50 million to India. The Nepalese government is attempting to put together a loan in order to pay off this debt. The government feels that the best way to pay off this loan is raise the price of oil and is opening talks on this subject this week.

Energy Minister stabbed during blackout

On April 12, the newly elected energy minister was stabbed during a 14 hour power outage that plagues Nepal. The Nepalese police detained 150 people looking for the two assailants.

Gokarna Bistais listed in stable condition after taking injuries to the head and neck. Out of the 150 people detained, 7 have been held for further questioning.

Civil War In Nepal

            In 1996, the Nepal civil war broke out as the communist party attempted to overthrow the existing government. The Royal Nepal Army was brought in to use police force to stop this uprising and two years later the amount of force was increased to try to stop the ongoing war.

            The Prince Dipendra killed his father and mother, King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya, in 2001, causing the kingship to fall to his uncle Gyanendra. Supplies and monetary aid was sent by the United States, Europe and India to the Nepalese government through the War on Terror in 2002. By the end of the war in 2006, there had been a close to 13,000 causalities.

The Thais moved from their ancestral home in southern China into mainland southeast Asia around the 10th century AD. Prior to this, Indianized kingdoms such as the Mon, Khmer and Malay kingdoms ruled the region. The Thais established their own states starting with Sukhothai, Chiang Saen and Chiang Mai and Lanna Kingdom and then Ayutthaya kingdom. These states fought each other and were under constant threat from the Khmers, Burma and Vietnam. Much later, the European colonial powers threatened in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Thailand on Tuesday urged authorities in its insurgency-ridden southern provinces to step up security surveillance after a string of deadly attacks in the region.

In the latest incident, a paramilitary soldier and two teenage suspected Islamic militants were killed late on Monday in a gun battle following an ambush on an army outpost in Pattani province, local police said.

Hours earlier a car bomb exploded in the main city in neighbouring Yala province, leaving one army ranger dead and 23 other people wounded, including civilians.
